Port Fourchon, La. Surf Fishing!
Surf Fishing Sunday
We surf fished the beach at Port Fourchon, La. Sunday! First good weather, low wind weekend in a few months! Water visability was sandy emerald green. The beach vehicle access is still fine as long as you drive down to the beach where you come in by the breakwater barges on the first two roads leading down to the surf. The older roads to the east are long, soft sand traps and still catching rookies. The water is still a little cold for Trout in the surf (near 70 degrees) but this will be changing shortly, only a few more weeks and they will be there. We tried to get some mullet to put out for redfish and they are hard to find, the bait shops did not have any frozen mullet either, (last choice), so we lost a couple hours trying various spots with the cast net and finally got a few fresh ones. High tide was at 1 PM so we had only a few hours to fish but caught a beautiful bull red, had one leader bit off (shark, jerked the rod like crazy when he picked it up) and got a few shrimp. More shrimp and crabs will be showing soon, the trawlers are working closer to the beach too. Beach sand built up the last few months and the sand bars have nice bottom structure again. You can wade them sideways on angles to find the deeper cuts at the ends. Recreational shark season starts in a week, all have to be released, beach, boat or bridge etc. 3 months closed season. Pay attention around you, if your kids are swimming, like mine, I have to release them live. (the sharks). So watch for beach anglers near you.

Nice redfish caught & released from the beach!

A few nice shrimp with a small squid too!

Also caught beer and oysters!
